Spring or autumn planting seasons are ideal for perennials. Planting in spring allows new plants to get established before summer heat and dryness arrives; while in fall, the ground remains warm enough for them to establish themselves before winter arrives.
When planting bare-root perennials, it is vitally important to dig a wide hole - at least twice as wide as their pot - in order to provide roots with ample room to spread out into loosen soil quickly, gathering moisture and nutrients more readily before becoming established in their new environment.
Consider color, texture and flowering times when selecting perennial garden plants. Early-blooming perennials like hellebore and trillium provide early color in your garden before summer arrives; foliage lovers such as hosta or heuchera provide contrast against flowers; while late bloomers like rudbeckia, aster and heuchera allow your floral display to continue into fall.
After your perennials are planted, make sure they are mulched immediately to conserve moisture, reduce weeds and moderate the temperature. Organic mulches like compost, manure, shredded bark mulches or straw should be used, as this helps conserve moisture while keeping temperatures comfortable. Granular fertilizer may burn tender perennial roots.
