Types of Kitchen Cabinets

When planning to add new cabinets to your kitchen or build from scratch, it's essential that you understand all your options. There are four grades of cabinetry to consider: RTA (Ready To Assemble), Stock, Semi-Custom and Custom; each offers its own set of advantages and disadvantages before making a decision.

RTA cabinets are sold as flat-pack pieces that the end user assembles themselves, with hinges and doors installed into their frames by attaching hinges to cases and attaching the face frame. A variety of design and style options such as full overlay or inset door styles is available on framed cabinets; inset styles allow the door to sit flush against its frame when closed for a timeless classic look that won't go out of fashion over time.

Solid Wood Cabinets are an increasingly popular choice, due to their strength and durability, as well as being aesthetic options for traditional or rustic kitchen designs. Unfortunately, however, their humidity-dependent nature may result in warping over time without proper protection against moisture damage.

Medium Density Fiberboard Cabinets are an economical option for modernizing their kitchen. Made of small pieces of wood glued together and hot-pressed with resin to form one continuous surface, MDF cabinets can easily be customized with grooves or designs making it a versatile choice.
