The Benefits of a Kitchen Island

kitchen island

Kitchen islands can make any kitchen more functional, providing much-needed counter space in the center of your home's cooking, cleaning, and food prep zones; plus they can serve as gathering spots for family and guests alike!

A kitchen island typically combines preexisting cabinetry and countertop. However, other configurations of this element exist - for instance an L-shaped design provides work and dining surfaces in one feature; ideal for open concept kitchens where cooks can prep at conventional counter height while dining on face-to-face seating from chairs or bar stools attached to tables provide face-to-face seating areas for eating.

An island offers extra storage that can make a significant impactful difference for small kitchens. A built-in pantry with deep doors on one side of an island provides space to stash napkins, cutlery and platters - items not usually associated with food prep - while shallow cabinets on the opposite side can house utensils or small appliances.

Light is of paramount importance in any kitchen island design, as its open workspace does not contain upper cabinets to hide task lighting. Therefore, pendant lights or recessed cans that illuminate directly onto the work area are key.

For an inviting country aesthetic, a painted wooden island with white quartz countertops allows materials and craftsmanship to take center stage. Beadboard trim and simple molding add warmth while an eye-catching herringbone tile shines bright.
