Quinn and Karen Hatfield of Melrose Restaurant fame have opened a breakfast-lunch spot called Sycamore Kitchen on La Brea Design Corridor that promises an incredible bakery counter, stretching for yards. There you will find more than chocolate croissants and gluten-free muffins; in its place are unique French pastries like puckered Breton butter pastry kouign amann, almond-scented brioche slice bostock, blueberry financier and pumpkin walnut galettes which crumble when touched.
By the time you reach the front of the order line, it may seem as though your reason for coming here has faded away; but once your rye chocolate chip cookie or slice of dark-ale gingerbread arrives courtesy of one of the denim apron-wearing waiters, your memory comes flooding back.
Savoury selections here also deserve your consideration, with the roasted turkey sandwich standing out as an exceptional rendition: thick slices of juicy brined bird layered on dense housemade bread with thin slices of Camembert and arugula along with cherry mostarda for a five-star effort.
Salads at Saffron are equally innovative and delicious. One of their signature offerings is the curry-roasted cauliflower and butternut squash salad with avocado and grapes; otherwise try their warm wheat berries, barley, chicken chilies and two fried eggs in one bowl which are absolutely irresistible!
