Painting Vinyl Siding

Renovating vinyl siding can give your home an instant makeover, and choosing a color choice that expresses who you are is a wonderful opportunity for personal expression. However, before embarking on this task it's important to keep certain factors in mind; dark hues can absorb heat quickly, leading to overheated vinyl panels which then overheat over time and cause the paint to bubble or peel over time if your home faces direct sunlight during most of the day.

Prior to beginning any project, check the weather forecast and select an ideal day that won't be too hot or humid. Next, it is essential that you thoroughly clean your vinyl siding as mildew and dirt can wreak havoc with any newly painted surface. A power washer can help remove this grime; just remember to direct its flow downward instead of pushing it under panels so as to prevent pooling behind them and potentially compromising vinyl panels' undersides.

Once your vinyl is clean, apply a primer. Although this step isn't always necessary, it will help the new vinyl adhere better to paint and lengthen its longevity. Once dry, you can begin painting using vinyl safe paint with urethane-acrylic resins that accommodate for expansion and contraction of vinyl; such products are available from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Behr brands.

Apply two coats of vinyl-safe paint using either a roller brush or sprayer, making sure to cover any areas not being painted and to properly cover seams.
