At Barn Wood Restaurant & Bourbon Lounge, guests enjoy high quality, unique cuisine paired with an extensive bourbon list from Chef Alan Lamoureux's menu of meat dishes as well as sweet touches, such as his popular warm bourbon fondue. The venue itself was built over 400 years ago from century-old local barn wood, providing guests with an experience like no other!
Bourbon
Bourbon whiskey has long been considered America's native spirit. From Civil War-era battles to Prohibition-era trials, this whiskey has played a pivotal role in American life - not to mention being enjoyed worldwide today!
To make bourbon, the master distiller creates a "mash bill." This recipe includes various grains (corn being the primary one), milled and combined with water before heating to transform their starches into fermentable sugars for fermentation. Finally, yeast is added as a starter culture to kick-start fermentation and ensure smooth results.
Once the mash has been fermented, its liquid is then distilled and bottled for bottling. For proper bourbon to develop its signature flavors and amber color, however, it must be aged in new oak barrels for at least two years in charred new barrels; longer aging adds greater complexity while also taking on its amber hue. A well-aged bourbon may exhibit flavors such as vanilla oak caramel.
Beer
Beer is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages on Earth. Crafted by brewing and fermenting starches from grains such as barley or other varieties such as wheat, rice, maize and oats into an ale-like beverage that's used worldwide as an alcoholic drink, beer has become the third-most consumed alcoholic drink globally - behind water (the world's most abundant element), ethyl alcohol, carbohydrates and carbon dioxide; its flavor comes from grain, hops and yeast used during production as well as water's dissolved salts which contribute dissolved salts which play into its flavor; soft London waters make good stouts while Burton upon Trent offers great bitters-sweet beers!
McCarty and Drake envision creating a casual yet inviting tavern space where whiskey will play an integral yet supporting role, combined with delicious, inventive hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. Perhaps most noteworthy will be an extensive collection of rare bourbon from family-owned distilleries across Kentucky, Tennessee and elsewhere; such a lineup will likely prove hard to duplicate--yet not impossible--to replicate; additionally, unlike most taverns this one will offer an extensive variety of craft beer options as well.
Wine
Wine can be produced from several fruits, including grapes. Juice is extracted from these fruits and the amount of skin contact while this occurs affects its color and style. Wine contains various chemical compounds found both within grapes themselves as well as those produced during fermentation, and may either be sweet or dry in taste.
Drake and McCarty decided to open OBC Kitchen, where whiskey would take center stage and food played an integral but supporting role. OBC Kitchen offers over 400 bourbons as well as an eclectic craft beer selection.
Century-old local barnwood offers guests an exquisite experience while they dine on high quality, distinctive dishes in a casual tavern atmosphere. The friendly and enthusiastic staff fosters an atmosphere of hospitality while Kentucky heritage is upheld through rare bourbons, an expansive craft beer selection and a carefully curated wine list - not forgetting an innovative menu inspired by local flavors!
Food
At OBC Kitchen, whiskey reigns supreme while food plays an integral supporting role. Our menu exceeds typical pub fare; thick-cut bacon glazed with honey and bourbon is served alongside a warm peanut butter fondue to dip chips into, along with meaty smoked ribs and mac and cheese dishes for snacking!
Chef Alan Lamoureux created a menu with comfort food with both sweet and savory components to go beyond typical bar food offerings. "Our goal was to create a place where whiskey would take center stage while still providing an outstanding food experience," Drake noted.
Centuries-old barn wood surrounds diners as they enjoy rare bourbons and eclectic craft beer in this 3,000 square-foot space, while they can sip Kentucky heritage through hospitality and cuisine at Old Bourbon County Kitchen (OBC Kitchen) which is part of Bluegrass Hospitality Group with six unique concepts including Malone's, Drake's, Harry's Aqua Sushi Kitchen.
