New sod is an ideal way to quickly transform any bare yard into a lush canvas of green, but its success depends on a consistent watering schedule - incorrect watering can cause dry spots, turf disease and even death for new sod! A uniform watering schedule prevents dry spots while encouraging sod roots to spread evenly for years of lush lawn beauty.
Watering New Sod
The initial week is critical in the establishment of any sod lawn. Water it four times each day during daylight hours during this first week to keep soil and sod moist but not saturated; soak soil to 6 inches depth first time you water then pull up one corner to ensure sod has taken root, firm attachment to soil with visible white roots that show.
During the second week, reduce watering frequency to between one and three cycles daily, depending on whether or not your sod is drying out quickly. Water in the morning to reduce evaporation and encourage deep rooting.
After three weeks, reduce watering periods gradually by monitoring sod for signs of drought such as light brown or blue-gray areas. To assess how much water you are applying, place like-sized containers in both dry and green areas; water them for 15-30 minutes then measure their contents to assess how much was applied. At this stage you should also begin a winter fertilizer program, providing essential nutrients during wintertime that will support a lush lawn come springtime.
